Verbatim Blu-ray Media with Printable Surface and 4x burning speed: Records 25 Gigabytes of Data in just 23 Minutes

25/01/2008
Eschborn, 25th January 2008 – Verbatim introduces new Blu-ray media to the market: With Verbatim's 25GB 4x BD-R media, users can record an entire disc in approximately 23 minutes. The higher performance makes the 4x BD-R media suitable not only for recording personal high-definition video, but also for backing up PC data or archiving photo collections. The Verbatim 25 GB 4x BD-R Printable will be available in specialist stores from February.

Verbatim’s new BD media is produced to the highest quality standards by Verbatim’s parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM) at MKM’s optical disc manufacturing facility in Mizushima, Japan.  The highly innovative recording layer used for Verbatim BD-R media have exceptionally wide power margins. “This makes them the best choice for critical applications because they ensure quality recording on the entire disc surface, regardless of drive power fluctuations or smudges on the disc surface”, says Torsten Leye, Marketing Manager Optical Verbatim EUMEA.

To achieve 4x recording, MKM fine-tuned the proprietary Metal Ablative Recording Layer (MABL) technology it developed for Verbatim's first-generation BD-R media. “Designed to ensure a wide power margin for stable recording, MKM improved the sensitivity of the MABL to attain the higher-speed recording while ensuring excellent recording compatibility and prolonged archival life”, says Leye.

The media’s printable surface can be easily inscribed with lettering and custom-designed motifs. The print area lies between 40 and 118mm from the centre of the disc.

The proprietary hard-coat finish on Verbatim BD media has superior anti-static and anti-scratch properties for added protection against scratches, fingerprints and dust particles that can occur during normal use. “This protective coating is vital in BD disc production because the BD data layer is close to the surface of the disc and is not protected by a plastic substrate like DVD media”, says Leye. "By combining MKM’s proprietary recording layer and hard coat protective layer with its precision stamper and molding technologies during the manufacturing process, Verbatim BD media customers can be confident they have media of the highest quality.”

Verbatim/MKM is a contributing member of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). Well-known for the role it has played in the development of Recordable and Rewriteable CD and DVD media, Verbatim has excellent relationships with the leading optical hardware manufacturers and provides them with benchmark media for performance and compatibility testing. “For end users, the additional testing means they will have the best compatibility between their hardware and Verbatim-branded media”, says Leye.
