Further to the release earlier this year announcing Verbatim/MKMs plans to support the development of Blu-ray disc, the company can now announce their development of new Organic based dye which can ultimately reduce production costs of BD-R, thus making it an affordable, high capacity media choice.
Earlier this year (June 9th 2005) MKM parent company of Verbatim and Pioneer announced the successful joint development of organic dye BD-R
disc based on spin coating process. This new Organic based dye is a breakthrough for the company and open up the possibility to reduce production costs. The spin coating process is the same as used for CD-R and R-DVD, and major investment of equipment would not be required. The current recording layer being used in early media samples is based on inorganic material meaning there are much more significant changes in production required. In addition, this new dye is based upon Verbatim/MKMs AZO dye which has become synonymous with Verbatim recordable media.
Currently this technology is proposed to the format group.
Verbatim Blu-ray media will be available with 25GB (single-layer) and later with 50GB (double-layer) capacities. With premium-quality recordable media that meets the specifications of this new high-capacity formats, users will be able to record and enjoy the amazingly sharp images that high-definition video provides. The high-capacity discs will also find extensive application in computer data storage.
Verbatim/MKM, which is already working with the standards groups and burner/recorder manufacturers to develop and refine the materials and manufacturing processes, has joined the BDA (Blue-ray Disc Association) as a contributor.
Verbatim officials noted that the company will leverage its experience in producing professional blue laser media to produce the new media. This past year, the firm has been shipping 30GB UDO (Ultra Density Optical) media that is increasingly being used in optical libraries for legal, financial, healthcare and government applications.
