I have a CD-RW drive that can use 8x media. Is it possible to use 16x media at 8x?

No, CD-RW media is currently classified into 4 groups with corresponding write speeds as it is not backward compatible.

  • CD-RW 2x-4x - Suitable in all CD-RW drives
  • CD-RW High Speed 8x-12x - Suitable in CD-RW drives with High Speed, Ultra Speed or Ultra Speed + logos
  • CD-RW Ultra Speed 16x-24 - Suitable in CD-RW drives with Ultra Speed or Ultra Speed + logos
  • CD-RW Ultra Speed + 32x - Suitable in CD-RW drives with Ultra Speed + logos only
