VELVE OLED Technology
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology promises to add a new dimension to lighting. OLEDs emit light through a process called organic electro luminescence when a current is applied to a film of light organic compounds. Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) has developed the necessary materials and production process to manufacture color (RGB) tunable OLED panels.
Characteristics of OLED lighting:

- Very thin structure
- Smooth light (can view the light source directly)
- Low power consumption
- Less heat emission
- Quick response for On / Off power
- No hazardous materials
- Simple device structure and operation
OLED is composed of organic thin films sandwiched between two electrodes, anode and cathode, all placed on a substrate. In the course of operation, carriers (holes and electrons) are injected from the electrode by applied voltage. This carrier recombination in the organic film generates emission.
MCC’s OLED panels exhibit the above features, but our unique technology enables other features which add to the possibilities for fixture designers:
- White Color Tunable from Warm White (2700K) to Cool White (6500K)
- RGB Color Tunable
- Dimming with constant flux and color
- Large panel size (150cm2 area)
- High CRI and R9 component (>80)
- Soft, “velvety” luxurious appearance
Available in production quantities in 2012, MCC OLED panels are suitable for many standard and decorative lighting applications. The thin structure will allow for OLED lighting to be enabled in places that lighting could not exist before. Hospitality, automotive and aviation are a few environments that will utilize OLED technology. OLED lighting will also compete with fluorescent lighting in the future.
