What are Cookies?
A Cookie is a small file downloaded to your computer that stores information relevant to the website you have visited. This information is then relayed back to the site on each visit to identify the user and allow you to receive the best possible experience whilst using the site. The information below contains an overview of the types of Cookies available and those in use by our website.
What types of Cookies are there?
There are four basic groups of Cookies as set out by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) guide for Cookies. These are as follows:
- Strictly Necessary Cookies These Cookies are essential in order to enable you to navigate the website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas, shopping baskets or e-billing.
- Performance Cookies. These Cookies collect information about how visitors use a website. It is only used to improve how a website works.
- Functionality Cookies. These Cookies remember choices you make (such as your user name, language or the region you are in) in order to improve your user journey and provide a more personal experience.
- Targeting Cookies These Cookies are from third party advertising companies and are used to collect information about the sites that you visit in order to create tailored advertising for the user.
Should I avoid Cookies?
In most circumstances Cookies are there purely to enhance your user journey and provide you with the best possible experience from the website you are visiting. Main areas of concern surround the targeting Cookies used by third party advertising companies as they observe your browsing habits and change advertising to suit. Some people may feel uncomfortable about this, but at Freecom we outline clearly all Cookies in use and how they can be turned off if desired.
How can I control which Cookies are used?
Virtually all modern web browsers give you the option to block Cookies entirely, or alternatively choose which ones you would like to block or accept. This gives the user full control over the Cookies used, though browsing may be compromised by eliminating them all together.
